It's my 1st weapon for this project, i hope you like it ;) no texture atm but i hope i can make it asap ;) Any advices, tips are welcome. Also here is link to 3d model.
It's Vholendrung, not Volendrung ;) Looks neat so far, but imo the edges should be sharper like in the oblivion version of the model. A warhammer doesn't need any curves!
same way u made the 1st one, but with no more than 3-4 thousand triangles. same shape and dimensions.
The angles and shading of the high poly (your 1st model) is transfered onto the UVd low poly model, by baking in a program called xnormal.
Okey so i made low poly and baked normals. 3996 faces is this okey? But i have some problems with textures, i cant find any good for this hammer :s
Maybe i will try zbrush later but i dont know this program and dont know atm how to make texture in this program or if this is even possible ;s
Both pictures show the exact same exact same hammer, one just the skyrim version. Still I was wrong, since in the german versions of morrowind, oblivion and skyrim its written vholendrung for some reason.
1 - 4000 faces doesn't mean 4000 tris(or triangles). In the world of modelling(and rendering in general), everything is made of tringles. In Blender, generally, one face is a square, composed of 2 triangles. Check on the top of Blender how many tris you have. 3000 to 4000 was the limit Ravanna gave you, so start cutting down some faces, since I doubt you have less than 4000 tris.
2 - zBrush is a program used to give "impossible" detail to models. The idea is, make a Low Poly version that can be used in a game and a High Poly one that will be used to create normal maps and generally make the textures look much nicer. Although it is an immensely good tool for details, it isn't 100% needed. My recommendation is, look into it, it's really good. But if you feel, somehow, against using it, you can still try to use Blender to give the same effects.
3 - Texturing... Well, yeah, that's a complicated part. Basically, you need to UV the Low Poly and then export that UV to an image editing software, like Photoshop, and paint over it, giving colors and patterns to the objects. You're never going to find textures for what you want because usually it's you that'll have to do them.
Well, I think that's about it. Just remember 3 things:
1 - Every question as an answer on the internet. Search on Google, YouTube and other sites and you'll probably find what you're looking for.
2 - Everyone here can help you. If there's something specific you don't understand, feel free to ask us all.
3 - If something is way to complicated and you don't think it'll be possible for you to do it, tell us and somebody else might offer to do that specific part for you. There's no shame in admiting your weaknesses.
Okey so i checked my tris count and my object has 4114 tris. Atm i make some textures and its look like in picture. What do you think? I am bad at texturing :<
So i made some textures (finally figure out how to). its not perfect yet cuz i don't make good specular but and in some places textures need little fix but i thnik its pretty good ;) So what's is your suggestion?
I would suggest you try pinch the edges of the hammer to give them a hard, sharp look as currently it looks very soft.
Also when you get to the low poly, try to keep it as a tight bevel to maintain that much needed hardness/sharpness
Low poly, 3.2k tris. It's not perfect yet ;) also if sb know good and simple way to make this edges sharpness in blender, I will be grateful for telling me how to do this ;)
After few tips and some critism i decide to learn more and check the mesh models in skyrim. It was very good idea and i recreate volendrung. Its more sharp now (i still choosing appropriate sharpness for edges) and topology is much better. Its low poly with around 1,8k tris (depends on bevel level). I think now its look more morrowindish :P Now will try add some details in Zbrush ;)
Symbols? You mean runes? ;p ATM made some screw and pin but i have problem with handle cuz i cant make it round :s is there ang tool in zbrush for smooth rounding? Or its just not possible cuz i used 16 edge tube :s
its dwemer, so id urge u to consider using bronze-like textures, or less silvery shine.
Given its look in prior games, as well as its upgrade material in Skyrim, there's a possibility it might be made of Ebony, rather than the usual metal of other Dwemer weapons. One of the lore dudes knows more I'm sure.
if we trust wiki it say ebony so maby a bit of dark metal look like the morrowind shape
but just go whit what u think is nice looking on your hammer
Volendrung, also known as the Hammer of Might, is an ancient artifact created by the DwarvenRourken clan. In appearance, it is a large ebony warhammer,
Should probably ask whoever is in charge of lore at the moment.
Personally I think it being ebony makes it a lot more interesting.
Regarding that last picture, I honest don't think the tiny swirls really fit in with what you already had there, or dwemer patterns in general, but that's not really for me to say.
I think that a good look would be for the inset to be made of dwarven metal, while the outer parts to be made of ebony with dwemer bolts locking it on. This would look asthetically pleasing, and also give it the Dwemer feel it was forged from. It would still look unique as it should, and also be cool and pack that ebony punch. good work so far czatar ;)
too many polygons on the hammer, but other than that, nice job.
It's Vholendrung, not Volendrung ;) Looks neat so far, but imo the edges should be sharper like in the oblivion version of the model. A warhammer doesn't need any curves!
It is Volendrung, he is remaking this hammer, not this.
Okey, i will make it sharper and atm remove lot of polygons ;)
the polygons atm are fine for zbrush, and a high poly bake.
Only make the low poly for the ingame version, and UV it.
same way u made the 1st one, but with no more than 3-4 thousand triangles. same shape and dimensions.

Youtube can teach u much of these things.

I guess we were both wrong then
What program did you use to make the hammer? Blender?
Ok, let's answer some questions:

So... Good work!
I wouldn't mind trying at making this low poly, can't guarantee it will be perfect though.
Ok nice, good work mate.
czater, may I ask, how did you do the normal map? Can you put it somewhere online for us to check it out?
also czater, do u plan on sculpting in some details with zbrush or something.
Okey so i checked my tris count and my object has 4114 tris. Atm i make some textures and its look like in picture. What do you think? I am bad at texturing :<
Ohh you tease!
Okey so i made a bit better highy poly and now looks like this:
But the final result low poly with texture still need some fixes cuz now looks like this:
looks good although i agree the textures for the metal need a bit of work. But otherwise keep it up.
So i made some textures (finally figure out how to). its not perfect yet cuz i don't make good specular but and in some places textures need little fix but i thnik its pretty good ;) So what's is your suggestion?
BTW its high poly

also it looks pretty close to the oblivion 1 u trying to remake that 1?
yep, its my reference image ;) So dwemmer feel, huh? Any suggestion? :>
its dwemer, so id urge u to consider using bronze-like textures, or less silvery shine.
The leather strap:
model it. model planes spiralling around the handle, then make them 3d.
Symbols: do in final texture, or zbrush.
This is the detail i made, what do you think? also don't look at he handle cuz i have to remake it because of mistake i made ;)
PS. BIG thanks to robbinsmoth ;)
It looks good but I think you should lose the screws and make them bolts, without marks for a screwdriver.
right or left?
Le
Left is just cool looking alpha and right is some dwemer symbol found here
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5bblzpykezcte7h/AAAApKouMoSOCZ9Iu...
right, but make the patterns follow the edges more, then fill the gaps with other dwemer symbs
I like the design on the right more.
what about sth like this?

I like ebony tex more than bronze. But what if i made like this and they won't accept this? :s

Orginal from morrowind looks like this
So i think its ebony?
New idea, better? i like it ;)
Maybe just try a raised crease in the ring around the center symbol.
Sorry I'm not a very good artist, but I think that gets the point across.
Why change from the design Oblivion had? it is the same style as the one from Morrowind only with better graphic quality
